SCOTLAND COUNTY, N.C. (WMBF) - A crash on U.S. 74 turned into a major fire Thursday leading the North Carolina Department of Transportation to close a section of the roadway.

Scotland County spokesperson Jason Robinson said in a press release the crash happened around 10 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of the highway. It is unclear how many vehicles were involved or how many people were injured.

The Scotland, Robeson, and Marlboro counties fire departments worked to assist the Laurinburg Fire Department with the fire caused by the crash.

At this time, the eastbound lanes from Exit 185 to Exit 187 are closed. Robinson said detour signs will be posted for drivers to bypass the crash site.

“The detour will take travelers on US-501 South to John’s Station where they will make a left at the Stewartsville Fire Department,” the press release stated. “Travelers will then travel on Old Maxton Road to Patterson Road back to US-74 Business and then back on to US-74.”

Highland Road will also be closed from U.S. 74 Business to Harry Malloy Road.

There is no timeline for when the roads will reopen.
