Man accused of shooting at N.C. deputies to remain in custody
ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. (WMBF) - A federal judge did not set bond for the man accused of opening fire at deputies in North Carolina in September.
That’s according to court documents, which show 20-year-old Shawn Locklear appeared before a federal judge in Raleigh for a detention hearing on Tuesday.
With no bond set, Locklear will have to stay in custody.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office announced back in March that Locklear was charged in a five-count federal indictment. Charges in that indictment include counts of drug trafficking, firearms and carjacking with intent to cause serious bodily injury.
Documents state Locklear allegedly possessed marijuana and a machine gun in September 2023. They also reference a previous complaint and indictment against Locklear, accusing him of shooting at authorities in Robeson County.
Deputies with the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office attempted to serve a warrant on Lockelar in November 2023 for violating the terms of his pre-trial release. At the time, Locklear was out on bond after being charged with a 2022 murder.
Locklear reportedly ran from deputies and through some nearby woods. He was then spotted behind a tree before allegedly jumping out and shooting at law enforcement.
According to the federal indictment, both deputies took cover behind their patrol car. Locklear then entered the driver’s side of the car and put it into reverse, running over one of the deputies’ legs. Locklear then drove away, but was later arrested.

The deputies, Jonathan Walters and Kaelin Locklear, were both hurt in the shooting but have since recovered.
Locklear faces up to life in prison if convicted on his federal charges.
