Pee Dee animal shelter ‘begging’ for fosters amid upcoming renovations
MARION COUNTY SC (WMBF) - The Marion County Animal Shelter says they need your help clearing space for upcoming renovations.
The shelter needs to move 30 dogs by June 1, the day they start “much-needed” renovations to an upgraded area for the dogs.
“This will be an enclosed area with 30 runs,” the shelter said in a Facebook post. “This will be done by the first week of August. This is a long overdue upgrade for the shelter and we are excited to finally be able to do this!”
However, the shelter said they’ll need to move 30 dogs for the renovations, which has proven to be a challenge.
These renovations must happen for the health and safety of the dogs, according to the shelter.
“We are hosting the #EmptyTheShelters event, begging for fosters, emailing rescues all day with no response,” the shelter stated in another Facebook post. “Everyday we have multiple calls coming in for owner surrenders, people with strays, people who report strays and nobody has stepped up to foster. ...We are BEGGING for help and nobody seems to hear us.”
The shelter is asking anyone needing to surrender a dog to look at other avenues besides the shelter, such as websites like Adopt-a-Pet, Petfinder and Home to Home.
For stray dogs, the shelter asks people not to pick up the dog without a plan.
“If you find a stray dog please do everything in your power to find a family member, friend or neighbor who can foster the dog,” the shelter said.
Now through May 15, adult dog and cat adoption fees are sponsored, with the shelter only asking for money donations or physical pet supplies in place of the fee. During that period, kitten fees are $25, and puppy fees are $50.
The shelter currently has around 90 dogs total on their property.
