Local students get spotlight at annual MYR art contest
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) - Students from across the Grand Strand were in the spotlight Thursday as the Myrtle Beach International Airport wrapped up its annual student art contest.
This year’s exhibit was shown off as the contest saw over 20 submissions this year. The contest’s theme centered around celebrating the diverse ecology of South Carolina and challenged students to come up with artwork “depicting flora and/or fauna that is native to the state.”
More than 2,000 votes from the community were also tallied up to determine a winner.
That first-place winner was Miley Watts, from Socastee High School.
“It makes me feel really good,” she said. “It makes me feel like I can get in more positions like this and I can actually do something with my art in the future and really succeed. It’s really exciting.”

The other award winners from this year’s contest were:
- 2nd Place: Rylee O’Leary - Academy for the Arts, Science, and Technology
- 3rd Place: Arella Ellmore - North Myrtle Beach High School
- Honorable Mention: Ellyn Fox - Waccamaw High School
- Honorable Mention: Rylie Rhodes - St. James High School
