Driver says he was ticketed for using cellphone in McDonald’s drive-thru line
SASKATOON, Saskatchewan (CTV Network) - A Canadian driver said he got a ticket for using a fast-food app to place an order while in the drive-thru lane, but police claim that’s not exactly what happened.
Mason Prima said he was driving into the McDonald’s parking lot on Idlewyld Drive in Saskatoon.
When he was just steps from the drive-thru order board, Prima said he saw an officer behind him on a motorcycle who was pulling him over.
The 18-year-old said he was loading his McDonald’s app before redeeming his free meal and was shocked he was ticketed.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police disagreed with Prima’s version of events, claiming he was on a public roadway when he was spotted.
It was all part of a Combined Traffic Service of Saskatchewan operation. They were the ones who handed out the ticket under the traffic safety act.
The ticket was for driving a vehicle while holding viewing, using or manipulating electronic communications equipment.
In a statement, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said, “An 18-year-old male driver was observed driving a vehicle on a public roadway while using a cellphone. A Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan RCMP officer initiated a traffic stop with the individual. The individual then pulled in the McDonald’s parking lot where the traffic violation was issued.”
Prima said he will fight the ticket in court. He did reiterate that he didn’t see a police officer on the roadway and only saw him once he was in the McDonald’s lot.
Prima also said he was not on his phone before getting into the parking lot and only had it in his hand within steps of the drive-thru entrance.
Prima intends on fighting the fine, but what he really wants is to make sure he doesn’t get points on his license.
