2 dead in Virginia plane crash en route to Georgetown County

Two people were killed in a Virignia plane crash Sunday while on their way to Georgetown County, officials said.(WMBF)

FLUVANNA COUNTY, Va. (WMBF) - Two people were killed in a plane crash on Sunday that was on its way to part of the Grand Strand.

Virginia State Police said the crash involving a twin-engine 1975 Rockwell Aero Commander 690A was reported just before 9 a.m. Sunday in Fluvanna County, just west of Richmond.

Officials said the plane left Manassas Regional Airport early Sunday and was flying to Georgetown County. Light rain was also reported in the area at the time.

The pilot and passenger, respectively identified as 63-year-old John Lathan and 73-year-old Niiben Ayivorh, died in the crash. Both were from Virginia.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.

State police confirmed both occupants, the pilot and the passenger of the privately-owned, twin-engine aircraft did not survive the crash.
