Coastal Carolina begins national search for new athletic director
CONWAY, S.C. (WMBF) - Coastal Carolina University will soon begin the search for a new athletic director.
The school announced Friday that Matt Hogue will step away from his role as Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics and University Recreation. CCU said Hogue, a broadcast veteran, will instead transition to a new role focusing on sports broadcasting at the university. The move is effective July 15.
Hogue was named interim director of athletics in 2014 before becoming athletic director in 2015. He was promoted to his vice presidential role at the school in 2021. The school said Hogue played a key role in the Chanticleers joining the Sun Belt Conference and the football program’s transition to FBS competition. He was also in the role during the baseball team’s national championship in 2016.
“As the University’s longest-serving director of athletics, Matt has led Chanticleer Athletics to new heights,” CCU President Michael T. Benson said in a statement. “He has witnessed first-hand the astronomical growth of our programs and overseen the most successful period of Chanticleer athletics. I thank Matt for his superb work and commend him for his continued commitment to Coastal Carolina University and our students. Given his wealth of experience and sports broadcasting background, he is uniquely qualified to lead this new academic endeavor.”
Hogue is also known for his 17-year stint broadcasting athletic events for the school.
“President Benson and I have discussed this idea [center devoted to sports broadcasting] in the past and now is the right time to move forward with it,” said Hogue. “I look forward to working with the Edwards College faculty on this new academic endeavor. My tenure at Coastal Carolina University spans nearly 30 years, and I have had the unique opportunity to work in administrative roles both inside and outside of athletics. I am excited about this new chapter with the University.”
CCU said a national search for a new athletic director is already underway. It also said former football coach Joe Moglia will continue in his role as an executive advisor to Benson, but will no longer serve as chair of athletics and executive director of football once the new athletic director is hired.
