MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) - The Myrtle Beach Classic is looking for younger folks who want to be a part of the PGA Tour’s first-ever stop in the Grand Strand.

Organizers said they still need some 14-to-22-year olds to serve as standard bearers at the inaugural event.

“They are the person who is carrying a board that has the player’s name and also what their score is at that current time,” said volunteers co-coordinator Joan O’Donnell “They start at hole one with a group of players and they will walk all 18 holes with that group.”

O’Donnell said over 1,000 volunteers for the Myrtle Beach Classic are from the local area, but not many are high schoolers or young adults.

“Most of our volunteers are older people,” said O’Donnell “So this is a great way to get young people involved in golf, involved in community.”

Darren Nelson, the tournament’s director, said this role gives kids and young adults the chance to watch up-and-coming golf pros up close.

“Cool part is you can hear the conversation between the player and the caddie whether it’s club selection or ‘hey the wind’s blowing this way’, to me that’s the most entertaining part,” said Nelson.

O’Donnell said they’re looking for about 20 people willing to spend one of the event days out on the course.

The tournament falling partially on weekdays also means kids could miss a day of school. However, O’Donnell said this is a rare opportunity and it can even count toward community service hours.

“My toughest days of trying to get standard bearers are the Thursday and Friday because kids are still in school, but I do think, I’m a former teacher - high school teacher - and I do think this is a unique opportunity for a high schooler, even to put on your college resume that I have done this because it is such a big event,” she said.

It does cost $25 to be a standard bearer, but that covers the cost of a polo as well as food and drink while working the tournament.
