FIRST ALERT: Widespread rain and gusty winds today
MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A strong cold front is moving into the area, bringing showers and storms into the area today. A strong storm or two remains possible.
TODAY
The latest update from the Storm Prediction Center has dropped our severe weather threat to a LEVEL 1. The morning showers and storms helped put a “lid” on our atmosphere. With more rain moving in, the energy and storm fuel will be hard to come by. Regardless, we’re still looking at plenty of gusty winds and heavy rain today. An isolated strong storm remains possible as well.

Most of you today will see rain and gusty winds. Winds will be breezy, even outside of storms with gusts of 20-30 mph. Any storm that forms today will have the potential to be on the stronger side with lightning, gusty winds and heavy rain. Our tornado threat remains very low.

The later arrival, even by just a couple of hours, is allowing for just enough storm fuel to linger around today. That could be just enough to produce an isolated severe storm or two.

As we head into the early afternoon hours, storms will quickly begin to move offshore, ending our severe weather threat and bringing in drier air.

Even outside of the storms today, winds will be breezy. Winds will gusts up to 20-30 mph throughout the day as the strong cold front passes through. Those winds will transition out of the north, ushering in big changes for the end of the work week.

BIG CHANGES AHEAD
Those gusty winds usher in the cooler weather, arriving by Thursday. Afternoon highs top out in the lower 60s Thursday and hold there through the weekend.

Mornings turn chilly, falling into the lower 40s along the Grand Strand. Areas inland of the Waterway head into the upper 30s with some patchy frost possible on Saturday and Sunday morning.
