WATCH: How to keep yourself safe, informed during severe weather

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - With severe weather season in full swing in the Pee Dee and Grand Strand, the WMBF News team wants to remind you of ways to stay informed and safe.
Tornados
First, it is important to note the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning. A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for severe storms and tornadoes. During a tornado warning, a tornado has been spotted or detected by radar.
But what should you do after a tornado warning has been issued?
WMBF News’ team of meteorologists says you should go to your safe place, which is the most interior room of your house or apartment. The goal is to be as far as possible from the windows, with walls surrounding you to protect from debris.
Alerts
Alerts are a big part of staying safe during severe weather. The WMBF News First Alert Weather app can deliver critical information, including if a tornado watch or warning has been issued.
One feature that can help you stay weather-aware on the app is the “follow me” feature.
To turn on the feature, you open the First Alert Weather App, tap “home” and make sure you have the “follow me” location highlighted.
That way, you get alerts when severe weather rolls through your area.
In addition to the First Alert App, you can also turn on emergency alerts on your phone.
To do that, you will open the settings app on your phone, tap notifications and turn on emergency alerts.
This will alert you to various weather warnings, watches and other public safety events.
