CONWAY, S.C. (WMBF) - The ‘voice of the Chanticleers’ is officially stepping back from the microphone after over 30 years with the program.

Joe Cashion has been at Coastal Carolina since the very beginning of the football program back in 2003. His career started on the sideline with a mic in hand where he was a part of the radio broadcasts until 2014. Up until that point Matt Hogue had been the Voice of the Chanticleers.

It was in 2014 that Hogue became the interim Director of Athletics, so Hogue called Cashion and asked him to be the next guy in the booth. Cashion said yes almost immediately.

“So many great memories and whatever calls I made, I mean ya know ‘TOUCHDOWN CHANTICLEERS’ or something like that, that’s kind of what it was,” said Cashion. “I kind of took that from Matt too because that’s what he used to do.”

Since Cashion has been a part of the program since 2003 he’s got a lot of memories that stick out, including some from the very beginning.

Coastal Carolina football had their program debut against the Newberry Wolves on Sept. 6, 2003.

The Chants won 21-14 in their first-ever game.

“The students rushed the field and tore the goalpost down,” said Cashion. “Now I didn’t have any connection to Coastal before that and I thought you know having my first college broadcasting job would be great, and that night it stopped being a job.”

While Coastal Carolina has become home for Cashion, his house is actually two hours away.

Cashion has been commuting from the Columbia area for the past 21 years.

He said it’s a big reason he’s stepping away from the mic, but he wouldn’t change a single thing.

“Unquestionably,” said Cashion. “I’d do it all again, no doubt it was worth it. Every moment of it, even driving back late at night after 7:00 kickoffs here, or after a coach’s show that ends at 8:30, 9. Absolutely worth it. I’d do it all again.”

Cashion announced his decision on Twitter earlier this week and said the outpouring of support has been unbelievable.

“I’m so appreciative of it all and just so very humbled that people would take the time to thank me and appreciate me,” said Cashion. “I hope I did a decent job and I just thank people for doing that.”

There’s no word on who will take over the teal mic yet.
