GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) - A 12-year-old is accused of making a threat at a Georgetown County school, according to authorities.

The Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday that a student at Carvers Bay Middle School allegedly sent a Snapchat message to friends threatening to shoot up the school.

A school resource officer later overheard other students talking about the message as they passed through the metal detector.

The sheriff’s office says the officer then gathered more information from students through interviews.

Officials said the student involved is charged with making school threats and will be subject to the Georgetown County School District’s disciplinary policy.

The threat was the latest in a string of similar cases involving students in Georgetown County this school year - including one threat coming from a student as young as 7.
