HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) – There’s a new tool to help fight human trafficking in Horry and Georgetown counties.

The Coastal Region Human Trafficking Task Force unveiled a custom smartphone app to educate people about the crime, as well as connect people for resources.

Human trafficking involves the use of force, fraud or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act.

The app provides information that will help people in the community recognize the signs of human trafficking and how to report it to the proper authorities.

“Human Trafficking can be a difficult crime to spot. That’s why we are constantly coming up with ways to educate the community and local law enforcement. We hope this app will encourage everyone to work together and protect our community,” said Horry County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Sherri Smith, who is the chairperson of the task force.

Another feature of the app aims to connect police and deputies through a First Responder portal.

The Coastal Region Human Trafficking Task Force app is available on Google Play and Apple.
