11-year-old killed in Florence County shooting

FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The Florence County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the Wednesday night shooting that left an 11-year-old dead.

Deputies were called around 8 p.m. to Clover Hill Road in the Scranton area.

The 11-year-old, identified as Brentlee Eugene Crump, was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.

An autopsy has been ordered, according to the sheriff’s office.

More information is expected to be released as the investigation continues.

Florence County School District 3 released a statement on Thursday as Crump was a Scranton Elementary STEAM Academy student.

It in part reads:

...Our hearts go out to the student’s family, friends and the entire school community during this difficult time. In response to this heartbreaking loss, Florence School District 3 is providing support to our students and staff. We have deployed a team of trained counselors to the school to provide immediate assistance and support to those in need. Additionally, ongoing counseling services will be available to ensure that everyone affected by this loss receives the care and support they need...

The district added they are committed to providing a safe and supportive environment during this time of mourning.

Crump also played baseball in the Coward Dixie Youth League.

The league said in a Facebook post they will be flying their flag at half mast for a few days in honor of Crump.

“Please keep Brentlee’s family in your prayers for the difficult days ahead,” the league said.
