Darlington Raceway honoring Cale Yarborough ahead of ‘Throwback Weekend’

DARLINGTON, S.C. (WMBF) - A NASCAR legend from the Pee Dee is being honored at Darlington Raceway ahead of the track’s spring weekend of races.
Track officials announced Wednesday that Cale Yarborough’s No. 29 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass will be on display at the Darlington Raceway Stock Car Museum. Yarborough, a three-time NASCAR champion and native of Florence County, died last year at the age of 84.
The car was the final one driven by Yarborough in his NASCAR career and was donated to the Florence County Museum in 2016. It was delivered to Darlington this week and now stands on display.
Yarborough also won 83 races throughout his career, the sixth-most in NASCAR history. He also won four Southern 500 races at his home track of Darlington.
“Throwback Weekend pays tribute to the drivers, crew members and team owners that paved the way for stock car racing as we know it today,” said Darlington Raceway President Josh Harris. “With the Lady in Black serving as Cale’s home track, it’s an honor to commemorate his impact to our sport with a display of his historic No. 29 car.”
The Darlington Raceway Stock Car Museum is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. It will have extended hours for the track’s “Throwback Weekend” from May 10-12, which will feature races in all three of NASCAR’s major series.
