CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - The Carolina Panthers have agreed to a lucrative four-year extension with star defensive lineman Derrick Brown, the team said.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the extension is valued at $96 million over the four years, including $63.1 million in guaranteed money.

Brown was the Panthers’ lone Pro Bowl selection last year after he broke the NFL record for most tackles by a defensive lineman in a single season. He has also intercepted a pass in each of the past two years.

Carolina drafted him with the seventh overall pick in the 2020 draft. Through the first four years of his career, he has racked up eight sacks and 245 tackles, establishing himself as one of the best interior defenders in football.

With the extension done, Brown will continue to anchor one of the league’s best defenses from a season ago.

He will be paired along the defensive line with newcomers Jadeveon Clowney and DJ Wonnum, both of whom the Panthers hope can improve their pass rush and fill the void left by the recently traded Brian Burns.

The $24 million average annual value ranks tied for fourth-most among defensive tackles. The 2024 season was set to be Brown’s final season before becoming a free agent.
