CONWAY, S.C. (WMBF) - Coastal Carolina is back in action even as the off-season carries on.

But questions remain about what the 2024 team will look like.

The Chanticleers had their second session of spring practice on Thursday, with everyone still getting used to new faces and the absence of some key players.

Head coach Tim Beck said they’ve got some holes in the lineup they need to address, but he’s got guys that are hungry to step in.

“I also think there’s a lot of jobs open, we’re not as veteran of a team, we don’t have as many guys coming back that have played a lot of football,” said Beck. “So everyone sees an opportunity to get on the field, so the focus, the detail, and the energy has been outstanding.”

The quarterback position is probably the biggest question mark in a lot of fans minds and Beck says right now they’ve got four quarterbacks on the roster.

Ethan Vasko and Blake Boda are both returning from last year’s roster. Vasko led the Chants to a 28-24 win over Old Dominion in his first start of the season and he stayed in that role for the remaining four games. He also led the Chants to their 24-14 win at the Hawai’i Bowl to end the season.

Boda saw a couple of snaps in games against Duquesne, Marshall, and Texas State.

The other two signal-callers in the mix are Noah Kim, a transfer from Michigan State who saw five starts last season with the Spartans and DJ Moore, a class of 2024 recruit out of Jacksonville, Florida.

“They can all throw it, they move well, they’re growing,” said Beck. “Obviously Ethan and Blake know this offense better than anybody because they were in it, Ethan obviously much more so than Blake, but I’ve been impressed with all of them; their ball placement’s been good, knowing what to do, where to go with it has been really good.”

Beck added that having a full season now under his belt should help add to improvements heading into 2024.

“When you play within the conference you get an idea of just who they are, what kind of players they’ve got, philosophically, what they do,” said Beck “Going into games this year it was all blind every week so being in this second year is certainly more advantageous than the year before.”

The Chants open the season on the road against Jacksonville State on Aug. 31.
